Solar Powered Fish Tank
My son loves fish aquariums. We wanted to place one in a location that did not have access to a wall outlet, but we still wanted it to have water filter/pump, so we built this solar powered fish tank. (UPDATE) We now have a solar powered Nano tank canister filter. You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wU9pyHqWd8

I’ve had a lot of …
I’ve had a lot of feedback from people and we’re going to try to move the filter outside of the tank and use an external pump instead of underwater system. The pump in the tank just takes up too much space. This new design will be solar powered as well.

After a month, it …
After a month, it seems to be doing well. The plants and the 4 baby guppies are thriving. It’s only a 2 gallon tank. When the filter is running at full capacity the spec sheet says it’s moving 180 liters an hour. That’s quite a bit of flow. We seem to have hit a sweet spot with the size of the tank and the filter capacity and the life in the tank.

Nitrifying bacteria …
Nitrifying bacteria starts to die off after an hour of no fresh water.
So doesn’t that mean it all dies over night?
P.S. You don’t need the carbon unless your water is full of chemicals.
Cheers.

It works even on …
It works even on overcast days as long as the the sky is bright. It’s not as strong, but a larger solar panel would probably address that. So far it been running every day for two weeks, without a problem.
