I am using an … I am using an Eshopps PF-800 overflow box. No, you do NOT need to drill the tank if you use an overflow box. Drilling the tank is the other ‘technique’ to draining/overflowing. You can either use an overflow box, OR, drill your tank. They both fulfill the same purpose.
u just saved me … u just saved me hours of what i would normally research and read online. thanks a ton! just what i wanted to know. o and btw, grEAt setup.
one main reason I … one main reason I have compartments also is, I wanted to seperate my refugium(which isn’t full of plants/algae yet but will be soon). the reason is, all the plants and algae would become stuck in the return pump, or I would have to put a sponge/filter over the return pump(which would slow its flow). So the main reason for adding the compartments was just to keep everything seperate. It also lets me keep the bio balls on the one side where the water gets the most circulation.
You will need … You will need tubing, probably 1” diameter(this is standard size for most overflow box drain holes). You of course need your water pump and tubing for that to shoot back to your main tank(tubing i used was 1/2″ and it fit snugly onto my water pump). As for compartments, no, you don’t need more then 1. you can setup your sump almost anyway you want. If you want it to be just a refugium, one compartment is fine. I wanted to split mine up just to keep it neat.
good video… When … good video… When you buy an overflow box, what else do you need to get for it? And would a sump work with only one compartment where the skimmer and heater would be? Or do you need more than one compartment… Ive never had a SW tank before
wanted to add as I … wanted to add as I didn’t put this in the video. To start the overflow box’s “U” siphon tube you stick a smaller air tube into the “U” tube. You place the “U” tube in the overflow box(under water on both ends); you then manually suck out the air from the “U” tube, then remove the air tube and your siphon is going.
